Celebrate 55 years of fighting for Civil Rights on Long Island

Please come party with us to celebrate bending the arc of history toward justice for the last 55 years. DJ Steezo is back from when he helped us dance the night away two years ago. The Savoy Ballroom was built for clubbing. And, of course, Ian insisted we end the night with another ice cream bar. We have to give a headcount for the Gala by next Wednesday, September 25, 2024, so now is the time to buy your tickets.

Long Island Housing Services, Inc. (LIHS) is thrilled to announce its 55th Anniversary Gala, taking place on October 9, 2024, at the elegant Savoy Ballroom in the Long Island Hilton. This milestone event will honor New York State Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos and Enterprise Community Partners, led by the Senior Vice President Baaba Halm, for their unwavering commitment to fair housing rights in New York State. Together, we can continue to bend the arc of history towards fair housing for all on Long Island.

Enterprise Community Partners Senior VP Baaba Halm

"Enterprise is thrilled to be this year’s Long Island Housing Services 2024 Gala honoree" said Baaba Halm, Senior Vice President of Programs, Enterprise Community Partners. “This honor is a testament to the strong partnership between Enterprise and LIHS and our shared commitment to strengthening fair housing on Long Island and beyond. Through our work together we have strengthened source of income protections, successfully won significant increases in fair housing enforcement dollars, and fought for equitable affordable housing development. I look forward to future collaboration together to make housing more affordable and accessible for those in need.”

LIHS has been fighting against housing discrimination on Long Island for over half a century, and they want you to join them. The gala will be a night to remember, with dinner, dancing, and a chance to mingle with awesome community leaders. DJ Steezo had us dancing the night away two years ago, and he’s back. Get ready for some groovy beats and irresistible moves. The Savoy Ballroom was built for clubbing. Expect a swanky atmosphere, dazzling lights, and a dance floor that begs you to strut your stuff. Because every celebration is perfected by a sweet treat, LIHS Executive Director Ian Wilder insisted we end the night with another ice cream bar. 🍦

New York State Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos "I am truly honored to be recognized by Long Island Housing Services at their 55th Anniversary Gala,” said Deputy Speaker Ramos. “I am deeply grateful for this award, as it reflects our shared vision to ensure that every Long Islander has access to fair and affordable housing. For over two decades, I have dedicated myself to advocating for justice, equality, and the rights of all. I will continue to fight for these principles, especially as housing becomes increasingly difficult for both young and older residents across Long Island. This recognition motivates me to keep fighting for the dignity and housing rights of all New Yorkers. Together, we can build a future where every family has a safe, affordable place to call home, and I will continue this fight in Albany to make that vision a reality."

LIHS encourages individuals passionate about civil rights to purchase tickets and attend the gala. The organization also invites businesses to consider sponsorship opportunities. Sponsorship provides valuable support to LIHS, and also allows businesses to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the community.

Deputy Speaker Ramos' Biography

Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos (D-Brentwood) has been a steadfast advocate for civil rights and working families on Long Island and across New York State for over two decades. A lifelong Brentwood resident, Ramos has dedicated his career to championing justice, equality, and the rights of the underrepresented. His unwavering commitment to fair and affordable housing has made him a leading voice in the New York State Assembly, where he works tirelessly to ensure that working families can afford to live on Long Island.

Since his election to the Assembly in 2002, Ramos has risen to the position of Deputy Speaker, making history as the first Latino to hold this role in the New York State Assembly. He uses his platform to advance the needs of his diverse district, with legislative accomplishments that include co-sponsoring the Green Light Law, the NYS DREAM Act, and raising the age of consent for marriage to protect minors. Ramos is committed to putting people before politics, ensuring all communities have a voice and access to fair housing.

In the Assembly Housing Committee, Ramos has been instrumental in addressing the housing crisis. He sponsored a bill to establish the Long Island Workforce Housing program (A.9881), secured millions in the state budget for affordable housing on Long Island, and introduced legislation to create a tax-free home purchase bank account for first-time buyers (A.4275). Today, he is actively working with the Governor’s office and other leaders to find real solutions to this growing problem and is determined to continue this fight.

Before his legislative career, Ramos served 20 years with the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD), including a decade as an undercover narcotics officer. He played a pivotal role in founding the Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society, bridging the gap between the Hispanic community and law enforcement. His legal actions against discriminatory practices within the SCPD led to significant reforms, cementing his legacy as a champion for justice.

What you won't see at the Gala

You know that we have been on a mission to make this a fun celebration of Fair Housing successes. We want to bend the arc toward justice joyfully.

Toward that end, our Board Vice President had the idea of having each table build a house together. When I tried to make that real as you can see in the video below, I was a failure with my first idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-fXlYqXJk8

When you attend the Gala you will see our much better second idea.
